The Great House...Where history and elegance combine

The 19th century Great House is at the heart of the Tryall Club as well as an important part of the Club’s and Jamaica’s heritage. Built in 1834, it commands a strategic position atop a hill with a beautiful oceanic panorama that extends from west to east.  Here you will find our reception and front desk, the guest services office and games room for children and teenagers.

Each afternoon at four o’clock, complimentary afternoon tea is served on the veranda and terrace. This has been an established ritual at the Tryall Club since the 1930’s when Ida DeLisser presided over the silver tea service refreshing the palates of visitors and holidaymakers. A fine, hand selected range of teas is available sourced from tea plantations across the world together with assorted sandwiches, pastries and scones with cream and preserves.

The Great House Bar is a great place to meet for pre-dinner drinks. Whether inside or outside on the terrace there are fabulous views out to sea. A comprehensive range of cocktails is available as well as premium Jamaican rum including various vintages from the Appleton Estate and the incomparable Blackwell Rum with its hints of coconut and spice.

For a private dinner party, the Great House Terrace is an unforgettable experience and we are happy to facilitate this upon request.

Beach Restaurant and Beach Grill

Relaxed and informal and located right beside the sea, the Beach Restaurant and Bar is a delightful lunch and dinner venue. It is the perfect place to head to after a morning on the beach, a deep sea fishing trip, a round of golf or energetic tennis match.

The menus incorporate the fresh produce grown in our organic garden. Irrigated by water from our own mountain spring, the organic garden is tended by two specialized agricultural staff. It grows a wide variety of salad leaves, herbs, arugula, tomatos and other vegetables. Guests are welcome to visit the garden which is located at the end of Calypso Way which is at the bottom of Mahogany Drive.

Lunch in the Organic Garden

Tucked away at the end of Calypso Way and neatly surrounded by a picket fence, plantains and banana is our Organic Garden. Here, under the watchful eyes of Eric and Mark, we grow a variety of produce for use in the Beach Café and Great House Restaurant.  Carefully selected organic seeds are sown in trays in what is the tropical version of a green house. Once germinated and established, they are carefully planted out in the wood-frame boxes of the garden. Naturally, we concentrate on what grows best in the heat of a tropical climate and the combination of sunshine, showers and daily watering using water from our natural spring ensures a rapid harvest.

Among the crops grown are several varieties of lettuce leaves; arugula which delivers a particularly invigorating peppery punch; callaloo – both red and green; spinach, bulb fennel; four types of tomato; bell peppers as well as Chinese peppers; cucumber, zucchini; sorrel and a great many herbs including several varieties of basil.

Such mouth-watering surroundings are a perfect complement to dining; upon request, we are delighted to offer lunch under the shade of a bamboo canopy in the Organic Garden. Needless to say, the menus make full use of what is growing around you together with choices that celebrate the ocean as well as what is reared on our fertile Jamaican land.  A minimum of eight persons is required and a maximum of twenty persons can be accommodated.
